Worms

At this time, I have never found worms in any of my finches and so this page is really here as a placeholder for new information should I ever experience this problem.

I have found worm eggs in a fecal smear from a sample taken from a red-tailed hawk. In that case, I found threadworm (known as capillaria in the falconry world). I believe the falconer treated with Ivomec and Panacur. I do not have experience with either medication.

I do keep a bottle of worm-out gel on-hand in case I ever do find worm eggs on a fecal smear. Note that in heavily infested birds, the worms themselves will actually be shed in the feces. The worms are visible to the naked eye. Obviously, it is preferable to catch the problem before it reaches this state.

Use the information provided herein at your own risk. When in doubt, consult a qualified avian veterinarian.
